Create your own power space

Make a magickal altar to heal, focus and fuel your soul.

Do you have sacred space in your home where you can charge your batteries and just be? I do not mean in front of the telly or your computer, but simply a space where you can sit and charge your batteries? If not, then I highly recommend that you try this out. It does not need to be super witchy and «woo-woo» (that’s just the way I like it). You can have your own personal power space which really fuels your soul and needs.

This can simply be a chair or space where you can retreat to focus your mind, take a break and catch your breath. As a working witch and tarot reader I have a an altar on top of an old cabinet (which is full of witchy stuff such as candles, oracle decks, crystals, tablecloths and a space for the cats, of course). This is my sacred space where I refill my batteries, focus my day and quiet my mind.

My altar is filled with both witchy-tools and knick-knacks that fills me with joy and serenity.

On my altar I have both symbolic powerful tools that I use for my celebration of the Sabbats, Esbats, spellwork and everyday magick. I also have a lot of different cute knick-knacks that simply have the purpose of bringing me joy. Sometimes I put fresh flower there, other times pictures of loved ones or gifts from my son on my altar to enhance gratefulness and the feeling of love and being loved.

Where can I put my power space/ altar?

Some decorations on my altar to celebrate Ostara.

The purpose of this space, big or small, is to give you joy, peace and a somewhere to charge your batteries. It does not need to be on an old cabinet like mine, it can be in a book shelf, a window frame, on a small part of you’re dining table or even be a transportable altar with your favourite things! Here are so other suggestions:

  • Garden altar.
  • A really good chair and a small table.
  • Your bedside stand.
  • A shelf in your kitchen or bathroom. Perfect to power-up while you brush your teeth or do the dishes.
  • On your desk.
  • In your hallway on a dresser.

The only thing that might be nice to remember, is to have it somewhere where you really can take a time-out when you need it. I meditate in front of my altar every morning during the week and sometimes during the weekends as well. It is really nice to retreat to this sacred space I can call my own. We all need a break from work, family and our own mind sometimes (!).

I know as a mother and entrepreneur that it is not always easy to take some time of and just relax. For me the altar also function as a brief sanctuary where I can just for some moments focus on my breathing, what I’m grateful for or to just be. With a designated power space or altar, you can with perhaps with greater ease take these moments to fuel your soul and energy. Try some different spaces and see what works for you.

Use your imagination and listen to your hear – what do you need?

Try different things and elements on your altar and vary through the seasons. As a witch I celebrate and follow The Wheel of the Year and honour the different qualities of each season. This makes me happy and I am more in the moment by using the altar as a reflection of both the outer and inner seasons in my life. I follow my intuition and decorate with things I feel that I need to feel more in balance. Here are some examples on what you can have on your altar:

  • Candle(s). I like to have one big one in the middle which I lit when I’m relaxing or do spellwork. This helps me to focus. You can also have smaller Spell-candles to du your candle-magick.
  • Crystals.
  • Divination tools, such as runes, tarot- and oracle cards. I pull a tarot- or oracle card every day and put the card on a little stand on my altar.
  • Flowers and/ or dried herbs.
  • Essentials oils. I have an oil diffuser that I use most of the time. It gives a lovely smell to the room.
  • Incense.
  • Nature elements such as, pines, rocks, sticks, seashells, feathers and so on. Follow the seasons here and se what Mother Nature has in store.
  • Pictures of loved ones.
  • A cauldron.
  • Notebook or your Book of Shadows.

These are just some few suggestions, you can put whatever you like – as long as it means something to YOU an it gives YOU joy and peace.

I hope this article gives you some ideas on how you can make your own power space or altar and that you take some time to take care of you by maybe bringing this type of practice in to your life. 💜
